Read More Velopharyngeal port is a vital structure in human body for carrying out important functions such as speech, swallowing, etc. Velopharyngeal incompetence arises due to ineffective or incomplete seal between oral and nasal cavity. The study of soft palate patterns like shape, length, and width offers an evidence to evaluate any risk factors for velopharyngeal insufficiency. This study was conducted to assess various palatal shapes and lengths using Magnetic resonance (MR) images and to establish their association with age and gender. A retrospective pilot study with 60 Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images belonging to 30 males and 30 females were assessed for soft palate shape, soft palate length, and vertical length. The data was entered in Microsoft Office Excel Sheet and was subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS version 26.0. Descriptive statistics like frequencies and percentages for categorical data, mean, and standard deviation (SD) for numerical data, comparison of frequencies of categories was done using chi-square test. ‘Butt’ variant was the most commonly encountered type, followed by the ‘Rat-tail’ variant as the second common type in our sample. A statistically non-significant difference was seen for the frequencies between the groups (p>0.05). The range of soft palate length (SPL) varied from 1.2 cm to 4.3 cm (S.D-0.674). The soft palate vertical length (SPVL) range is from 1.2 cm to 4.3 cm (S.D.-0.687). No statistically significant association of SPVL with the type of soft palate was seen (p>0.05). However, soft palate length (SPL) increases significantly with age. The study showed soft palate length increases significantly with age. Hence older individuals can be screened for soft palate related abnormalities for evaluation of sleep related disorder. Further such studies with more sample size are required to establish a correlation between the shape and length of the soft palate. This can aid as a diagnostic clue in the early diagnosis of soft palatal abnormalities during the patient examination.

Read More Partial or an incomplete penetration of bonding agent into the demineralized dentin can leave the denuded collagen fibres susceptible to degradation by photolytic enzymes. It is well known that the demineralized dentin and its collagen network is susceptible to degradation with time which can significantly affect the bond strength between root canal and sealer materials. The current study attempts assess the protective effect of proanthocyanidin (PA) loaded PLGA nanoparticles in minimizing the deterioration of demineralized dentin over a period. This is realized by determining/evaluating the push out bond strength between a glass fibre post cemented to root canal using resin luting cement. Ninety human mandibular premolars with single root canals were randomly divided into nine groups (n=10) after endodontic treatment and post space preparation. The root canal dentin of the control group was left unconditioned and the experimental groups i.e. proanthocyanidin and PA loaded PLGA nanoparticles (PA-NP) were conditioned respectively with the test solutions. The glass fibre posts (GFP) were cemented into the root canal with dual cure resin cement (RC). The push out bond strength (POBS) was measured at 30, 60, and 90 days. The mode of failure was evaluated with the help of stereomicroscope. The POBS were statistically analysed and evaluated with the help of paired t-test, ANOVA test and post hoc Bonferroni test at a confidence interval of 95% (α = 0.05). Unloaded NP's average particle size was found to be 237 16 nm, and its zeta potential was -54±4 mV. There was a statistically significant difference between the mean POBS at all time intervals among the groups tested. PA-NP showed a statistically significant higher bond strength compared to control at all time intervals, while it showed significantly better POBS compared to PA at 180 days. All the experimental groups showed higher POBS at all intervals of time compared to control group. Application of natural cross-linkers such as PA improves POBS of GFP bonded to root canal dentin. PA loaded PLGA nanoparticles (PA-NP) as a conditioning liquid prior to root canal cementation not only improved POBS significantly, but also reduced the time dependent reduction in the bond strength.

Nevertheless, early caries lesion prevention and biomimetic treatment are still difficulties despite massive efforts to promote dental hygiene. Nanoparticles' exceptional qualities make them a promising biomaterial for a variety of medical and dental uses. There are a lot of exciting and promising uses for nanotechnology in the field of tissue repair and replacement, especially in dental mineralized tissues, thanks to the growing interest in this area. This research aimed to examine how certain nanoparticles and CO2 laser radiation affected the microhardness of enamel. In order to conduct the microhardness test, 80 first premolars from the maxilla were randomly split into eight groups, one control group and seven study groups, each containing ten teeth. Each tooth’s buccal (cheeky) side was standardized to have a circular window placed there, measuring 6 mm in diameter. The exposure period was 5 seconds in continuous wave (CW) mode, and the laser power was calculated to be 0.85 W using a unique equation. The concentration of the hydroxyapatite nanoparticles solution employed was 10%, whereas the concentration of the iron oxide nanoparticles solution was 12.5%. In this study, we evaluated the effects of certain agents on the microhardness of enamel before and after inducing a caries lesion by pH cycling techniques. Hardness variation was determined for each sample using a tailored equation. After demineralization, enamel microhardness values were found to be significantly lower across the board compared to healthy teeth’ microhardness values. This was the case across all groups. After treatment with certain agents, there was a marked increase in enamel microhardness values for all groups, with a statistically highly significant difference (p<0.001). The groups treated with laser followed by hydroxyl apatite nanoparticles (HANPs) and those treated with laser followed by iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) saw the greatest increases in their microhardness values. Treatment of teeth samples with laser followed by iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) induced the greatest change in enamel microhardness, while treatment of teeth samples with IONPs resulted in the lowest change in enamel microhardness compared to all of the other agents. As a potential preventative intervention against dental cavities, enamel treatment with CO2 laser, hydroxyapatite, and iron oxide nanoparticles might be examined.
